PENGUINS

Penguin chicks beneath Nordenskjold Peak on South Georgia (Doug Stoup)

The King Penguin is blue-black with a white belly and gold markings at the sides of his head. Almost three-feet tall, the King is the second largest penguin and can swim at speeds of up to 6 mph. They live along the coasts of the sub-Antarctic Islands and their nesting colonies may consist of as many as 10,000 birds. Rather than build a nest, King Penguin moms and dads take turns tucking their single egg under their bellies and resting it on their feet. Young penguin chicks are furry, and remain so until they reach adulthood. Learn more >

PENGUIN FACTS:

Though penguins are birds, they don't fly.

They spend most of their time underwater.

Their main food is fish.

King penguins can reach 38" tall.

Penguins are warm blooded like us. Their blubber and feathers help to protect them from the cold; but they still need to huddle together to stay warm.

A penguin nesting area is called a rookery.
