POLAR BEARS

Polar bears, along with the Kodiak bear, are the largest four-footed carnivores on earth. Males can weigh between 500 and 1500 pounds, while females weigh between 350 and 700 pounds. The polar bear's coat is not actually white. Each hair is a clear, hollow tube that brings the sun's warmth directly to the polar bear's skin. Polar bears can be found in the United States (Alaska), Russia, Canada, Greenland, on Norway's Arctic islands, and traversing the frozen Arctic Ocean. They can travel up to 15 miles per day -- or even farther, if they hitch a ride on a floating piece of ice.
