WHAT IS A YAK?

Yaks are long-haired, large animals that are similar to a bison (buffalo) or an ox. They are native to central Asia, and have been domesticated in Tibet and the Himalayan foothills. Yaks are used by Sherpas (Buddhist people who often work as mountain porters or guides) to haul heavy loads for climbers and explorers.

Wild yaks may weigh up to 1,200 pounds.

Yaks are a member of the ruminant family which includes sheep, cows, giraffe and deer. Ruminants have hooves with even toes, chew cud and have a four-chambered stomach.
